If you are reading this then someone has probably told you about their training experience on Soi Taied Phuket (or “Fitness Street”) and you are keen on seeing what all the fuss is about.
If this is you, hang tight. I’m about to give you some top tips before you come and visit this fitness “heaven” tucked away on a very long street in Phuket — also known casually as “Fitness Street” or Soi Taied Phuket. I like to call it Fitness Street because it has plenty of facilities for someone (like me) just wanting to get into shape or stay in shape under the amazing Thai sun!
The best way I can explain Soi Taied Phuket to someone who has never been here is to relate it to other streets famous for other things. Rodeo Drive (Los Angeles) for glitz and glamour, Chapel Street (Melbourne) for shopping and cafes, Wall Street for economics and trading, and so on. Well… Soi Taied is a street dedicated to the world of fitness!
If you are 69-turning-70 from New York, at the top of your game in MMA, or trying to quit smoking and lose 7 kilos then read on (I’ve met these types of people!) — this place will fundamentally change your life.
December 2019 Update: I recently returned from another trip to Fitness street (December 2019) and filmed a ton of videos and wrote a new article (vlogs included in the article). Don’t forget to read the article linked below!
What Is Soi Taied Phuket (“Fitness Street”)?
If you Google Soi Taied Phuket you’ll be pointed to a very long street in Chalong (Phuket.) Click link for exact Google Map location. This is a street filled with training centres for different styles of martial arts (Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ, K1,) gyms, supplement stores, and eateries that have menus specifically designed for weight loss goals.
You’ll also stumble into small bamboo protein shacks on Fitness street (pictured above and below.) You’ll pay 60–100 Baht (a few dollars!) for a 24-gram protein shake with your choice of any of the fruits displayed on the bench in front of you.
Below, is another random “protein bar” that you’ll find as you walk down Soi Taied. The protein bar that you see pictured below is directly beside Unit 27 — the strength and conditioning CrossFit training centre (watch Unit 27 Vlog)
A few people have asked the question of “is it safe to drink protein shakes off the street” and “is the water they use to make the shake okay?”. Short answer. Yes! You’ll see people drinking shakes from them all the time.
Over the last couple of years that I’ve travelled here — I’ve never experienced any food poisoning or illness. And I eat mostly street food. Nor have I encountered others experiencing any issues — not even a single case study!
But wait, there’s more!
As you continue walking down Fitness street, you’ll walk past training centres like Unit 27 (pictured below.) You’ll often see the CrossFit crowds run out onto the street with medicine balls on their shoulders and up the hill in the hot Thai sun! It looks intense! Check out this Unit 27 Vlog to get an idea.
It looks something like this.
And the guys and gals that train at Unit 27 have a wide range of skill levels — from the beginner through to the “Fitness Influencer.” They all train under the one roof 🙂 This place is for everyone!
Further down on the same street is a really good eatery appropriately named — Muscle Bar. Everything on the menu is labelled with their macro nutrient and calorie breakdowns so you can meal plan according to your goals.
Hire A Motorbike (Or Scooter) on Soi Taied Phuket
This is a huge recommendation. Huge! The reason for this is because taxis are a rip off. I’ve mentioned this suggestion in other articles and videos but it cannot be ignored.
If you plan on staying on Fitness street for longer than a week and you can ride a scooter or motorbike, hire one on a week to week basis. It will cost you around 1,500 Baht ($60 AUD) which is nothing compared to the return cost of a taxi to any destination away from Fitness street (Karon, Patong, etc.)
In a taxi, expect to pay 800 Baht ($30 AUD) for a single return trip. It’s not worth it.
During my first trip to Fitness street in August 2017, I hired a “chopper.” This is what it looked like 🙂
Because everything on Fitness street is closed on Sunday, it is not a bad idea to hire a scooter or motorbike and get away from this street. If you need “adventures away from Fitness street” ideas. I’ve filmed a couple of day trip vlogs that can help you plan your Sunday.
Here is a vlog of our adventures that Robyn and I embarked upon on our “rest day” away from Fitness street.
17 Things to do in Phuket
Solo Travelling to Soi Taied Phuket (Fitness Street)
I’ve solo travelled to Fitness street twice and within the first beginner Muay Thai class at Tiger Muay Thai, I had befriended 1–2 people in the class that I later had lunch with along the street.
In the below photo, both Matt and I had arrived on Fitness street as solo travellers and by the end of the class, we were buddies 🙂
I commonly get asked by solo travellers, particularly females, whether it’s safe to travel here and whether they will meet people. The answer is yes on both accounts.
I suggest watching all of my Fitness street vlogs in my YouTube playlist. You’ll quickly “feel” the vibe of this place and be quickly be put at ease. There is no issues with safety here whatsoever and you are guaranteed to meet like-minded people in your class within your first or second class!
I’ve spent a total of 4 weeks on Fitness street across two separate trips. I can honestly say that you will always bump into the same people on Fitness street, from day to day. You’ll cross paths multiple times, eat together, train together, and perhaps find the love of your life! 🙂
Meet Yamine from Switzerland
I met Yamine when I was doing a beginner Muay Thai class with Tiger Muay Thai. He is a Muay Thai fighter from Switzerland. He did so well that he was invited to fight at Galaxy stadium which I followed along and filmed for him.
If you want to watch a video that I created for Yamine where he fought his first professional Muay Thai fight in Thailand, go and check it out here.
The Big Buddha Run
The guys pictured above were part of the Big Buddha run that I did with Tiger Muay Thai.
The guy on my left is from the U.K and the one on the right is from Argentina!
By the way, if you are keen on doing this awesome little run with a group of people up to the Big Buddha statue (and lookout,) you’ll need to register with Tiger Muay Thai on Monday. The run commences at around 7 am on Tuesday. The Big Buddha run is every Tuesday!
I actually created a short 5-minute video on my YouTube channel of this awesome run — you can watch it here. If you like the idea of this run then don’t forget to sign up. You might even see me on this run! 🙂
The Trainers on Soi Taied Phuket
You’ll even develop a really good relationship with some of the trainers here. After all, you do see them for up to 4 hours a day, 6 days per week!
You’ll become really attached to Fitness street. Trust me.
It is the reason why I’ve done two separate trips to this amazing fitness paradise, 4 weeks apart, for a total of almost 14 days each.
This is probably one of the most popular places that alot of fitness fanatics hang out for a feast. It’s cheap, it’s on Fitness street, and the menu serves up clean calories for those looking at shedding weight while tracking calories.
Don’t be put off by the menu though. The menu looks like it survived the era where asteroids hit the earth. Check this out (I joked about it on Instagram.)
There is no filter on this image! This is exactly how the food is served at Tony’s Restaurant.
The vegetables are plain and there are no added oils or anything hidden that most other restaurants in the world will throw into their meals. The chicken is steamed or grilled. It’s cooked fresh 🙂
One time I opted for the sweet potato, veggies, and salmon option. This is what I received.
Usually after my morning Muay Thai class at Tiger Muay Thai, I’d head down to Tony’s and have the “fruits and yogurt” option. Something light.
I would do this because I would usually do another class 2–3 hours later. This is what it looks like.
Just. Simple! You must go to Tony’s and try the food for yourself. It feels like stealing when they only charge you $3–4 for a main dish.
So as you’ve probably established, the food served at Tony’s restaurant on Fitness street is clean and has a very high turn over. As mentioned, there are professional fighters that eat here. I highly recommend checking this place out and letting me know what your thoughts are.
Buying Training Supplements on Soi Taied Phuket (Fitness Street)
I usually carry my protein powder and BCAA powder with me everywhere I go, including Soi Taied. It wasn’t until I saw the prices of the protein powder at one of the supplement stores that I realised that I should empty my suitcase before I arrive at Soi Taied — fill it — then return to my home country with supplies from Soi Taied.
But I want to point out that I only saw this huge discrepancy in the prices at this store (pictured below.)
Phuket Health Shop is on the corner of Fitness street and the main road, where Top Team is located. This is the store where you will save some money on workout supplements.
Primal Fitness on Soi Taied Phuket
There is a nicely equipped gym on Fitness street in case you are missing the dumbbells and barbells aspect of your training.
To be honest, I do all of that back home and usually only do Muay Thai training on Fitness street. And after doing 2–3–4 hours of Muay Thai training per day, there is no physical energy left over for anything else.
So is this gym well equipped? See for yourself.
So as you can see, the gym is well equipped. Definitely a place to go if you need your weight training fix.
As I’ve mentioned, depending on where you decide to train, you might already have access to a gym. For example, Tiger Muay Thai have a well equipped gym which you will have access to as part of your fitness package.
Sunday Is Rest Day
Fitness street is quiet on a Sunday! Even Tony’s restaurant is closed 🙁
What I suggest you do is take your hire motorbike out to one of the beaches (like Kata beach, Patong, etc) — earlier in this article I give example itinerary ideas for your Sunday “rest” day 🙂
What is quite common is that some guys will finish their last class on Saturday and then jump on their motorbike and spend the night partying in Patong — recover on Sunday — then be ready for training again on Monday.
It’s not too common for the hardcore fitness freaks to party. In fact, while I have been training here, I haven’t done any partying or drinking. It sounds “boring” (I know) but it is just not my thing. I’ve come here to train and make the most out of the training here.
Training At Tiger Muay Thai
For me, I’ve come to Fitness street to learn Muay Thai. You can learn other styles of martial arts like MMA, BJJ, K1, etc, or you can just stick to strength and conditioning classes. The choice is yours.
I chose Tiger Muay Thai because they are the largest fitness training centre on Fitness street with alot more options than any of their competitors.
I paid for a weekly all-inclusive fitness package. It includes unlimited access to any of the classes, gym, and of course, their Muay Thai classes.
If you have never been to Fitness street, I suggest trying Tiger Muay Thai for 1 week and trying their all-inclusive fitness training pack.
This is an opportunity to try less common martial art styles like Krabi Krabong and Muay Boran. You’ll meet new friends and can collaborate on classes that you can do together — like Western Boxing, Strength & Conditioning, and Yoga.
If you’ve never done Muay Thai before and would like to see exactly what their beginner class looks like, check out the following vlog I created. The class is so much fun and you do not need any experience whatsoever!
After trying everything on the Tiger Muay Thai fitness schedule, you can elect to focus specifically on a certain style of training moving forward. During my first trip to Fitness street in August, I tried everything.
Here are some photos from the strength and conditioning classes that I did with Tiger Muay Thai.
Here is a photo of what the intermediate group class looks like at Tiger Muay Thai.
And there are no age excuses! The guy on the left is 61 years old…. I know! 🙂
Open Your Mind — No Regrets
You will have a blast. This place is unlike any other “fitness” vacation. Almost every other fitness vacation is “sit on the beach, do yoga, and watch the sunrise.” Fitness street is the standard for fitness vacations and you should really come over and check it out for yourself.
Make sure you find accommodation that is either located on Fitness street or within a 5–10 minute distance from this street. I’ve done a number of hotel / resort review vlogs of places you can stay at on or nearby to Fitness street. You’ll find them in the Fitness street playlist (YouTube).
And even though you can buy all of the gear when you are here, it is probably not a bad idea to bring your own — if you have it!
If you have any questions, let me know. If you plan on coming out here then I might be in the area — just send me a message 🙂
