One of the most frequent questions I get is — “Brad, what protein supplement do you take?”
The truth is, I have tried many different types of protein supplements over the years but the product that I consistently default back to is Optimum Nutrition Whey Gold Standard. And no, I’m not sponsored to plug them — I never have been and probably never will be. I just genuinely love their product.
In case you are wondering whether you should try this product — my answer is a resounding YES! And stick with me while I share with you how I’ve used this supplement to meet my protein needs, and get into pretty awesome shape!
For almost 7 years now, I’ve fallen back to this product to consistently meet my daily protein requirements. And in case you are not familiar with how I looked before I started my fitness journey — it was this:
At the time this photo was taken, I still didn’t know what I was doing in the gym (or the kitchen!). But after “figuring it out” (which I discuss in other videos and articles) — I managed to get into the best shape possible.
That tan does look ridiculous in hindsight, but regardless, I managed to win a few bodybuilding competitions back in 2017.
And during the competition preparation phase of my fitness journey — I was only taking Optimum Nutrition whey as a protein supplement. Of course, I was eating chicken and beef to meet half of my daily protein requirements.
How I Take It
The reason for this is because it takes a little bit of time for whey to be absorbed into your body to help start the process of rebuilding muscle tissue.
So 1 scoop of whey is around 24 grams of protein. So I am usually getting a total of around 35 grams of whey protein pre-workout and again, post-workout.
My Favourite Mixer
Water 🙂 Yeah! Alot of people are revolted by using water to mix their whey protein. In my experience, when I use water with some of the Chocolate or Mocha flavours offered by Optimum Nutrition — it tastes really amazing! Other flavours tend to taste worse with water and thus, using skim milk is best. The choice is yours! If you wish to add milk, then do that.
Should You Buy This Product?
Not necessarily. In general, I don’t believe in any supplements because you actually don’t need them. And anyone that pushes supplements onto you usually has an agenda to make money out of you — period.
There are only less than half a dozen supplements that can assist you as “icing on the cake” to your end goals but no supplement will save you from a terrible meal plan or training program.
With that being said, protein supplementation can help you reach your daily protein requirements — especially if you are weight training on a regular basis. Unless you can get all of your protein requirements from whole foods such as chicken, fish, beef, etc — protein supplementation becomes essential.
So I’d say… try Optimum Nutrition whey and let me know what you think 🙂 If you’d like to learn more about this product on Amazon, check it out here!
One of the reasons why I love this product so much — even though they are not the “cheapest” on the market — is they are an established player in the sports supplement business.
They have been around since 1984 and have stood the test of time. There are alot of protein supplements on the market which are absolute rubbish, albeit cheaper, are just not worth your money.
Personally, I’d rather spend a little extra money and know I am getting a good product with solid branding, with a ton of flavours to choose from.
