December 2019 Update: I recently returned from another trip to Fitness street (December 2019) and filmed a ton of videos and wrote a new article (vlogs included in the article). Don’t forget to read the article linked below! 

As some of you know, Robyn and I recently returned from a fitness vacation of a lifetime in Phuket that I refer to as Fitness street, or Soi Taied — the same street as Tiger Muay Thai.

During our 3-week stay on Fitness street in November 2018, we did several private Muay Thai classes with different trainers, from different Muay Thai gyms in the area, before choosing Kru Phet (Tiger Muay Thai trainer).

Why bother doing Private classes at Tiger Muay Thai?

The group classes are packed! If you ever decide to visit Fitness street and specifically, train at Tiger Muay Thai, then you will notice very crowded Beginner and Intermediate Muay Thai classes. Especially early in the week (Mon-Wed) when the crowds are still fresh! Toward the end of the week, the group classes get smaller and smaller as guys and gals get tired (or injured, or both!)

Personally, I believe doing the Private classes at Tiger Muay Thai is the only way to get proper one-on-one attention to your technique albeit, it does cost 700 Baht ($31 AUD) per one-off session!

Private Muay Thai classes are the perfect solution to learn the proper techniques taught in the group classes. In the group classes, there could be up to 30 students and less than 10 trainers. So you could be doing the techniques wrong and not get corrected by any of the trainers.

However, when it comes to finding a trainer for private classes — not every trainer is created equal so I do suggest shopping around and trying different trainers at Tiger Muay Thai to find one that resonates the best with you. Some trainers are more passive and others more proactive with correcting your technique.

Booking A Private Session



If you are intending to come to Tiger Muay Thai or any other fitness camp in the area around Fitness street, I suggest sticking to group classes for the first week to help adjust to the extremely hot climate here.

Unless of course, you are well conditioned to a hot climate back home then you’ll probably have no problems jumping straight into the hardcore private sessions here at Tiger Muay Thai!

I need to warn you — the Thai heat is not forgiving! I’ve met quite a few travellers from the Nordics, for example, that have completely melted in the scorching hot training environment here. The group classes are a perfect way to help you adjust, trust me 🙂

Below is a Private class vlog that I edited to show you how intense these classes are. I am training with Kru Phet who is one of my favourite trainers!

One time I visited Fitness street (from Melbourne) and by Day 2, I was completely burnt out at a 1/3 of the way through a private session because of heat exhaustion! I wasted my private session puffing and panting in the excruciating heat (while my trainer waited around for me!)

Picking A Trainer



As mentioned, you may need to shop around to find a trainer that resonates best with your personality. I honestly believe that starting your training journey at Tiger Muay Thai by doing group classes, will give you enough contact time with some of the trainers to help you decide who you want to give your 700 Baht to in your private sessions.

For example, if you are doing the Tuesday morning Beginner Muay Thai class (08:00–10:00) and out of the seven trainers, only one has taken the time to correct your technique during the class — well, that trainer might be the one to hire for your private sessions!

Private Muay Thai Sessions for the Ladies

Absolutely worth it! In our most recent trip to Fitness street, Robyn also made the most of her training experience here by booking private sessions with different trainers.

Robyn has a background in Pilates and very little experience with Muay Thai. Actually, prior to this trip she had no experience with Muay Thai! She absolutely loves Muay Thai for the incredible fitness benefits it offers, as well as invaluable self-defense skills that she can take with her anywhere she travels to in life 🙂

My Final Thoughts

I’m not sure if Tiger Muay Thai offer special discounts if you decide to do a package of private sessions. Robyn and I have only purchased one-off sessions here and there with different trainers.

For us, Kru Phet is our favourite trainer and he trains both of us! He is a very enthusiastic trainer! Not to mention, he is a three times National champion that was awarded accolades by the King of Thailand. Impressive huh?

Robyn and I have met Kru Phet’s wife and child, and even supported Phet at a recent fight he had at a local stadium. As I mentioned, if you spend enough time with your trainer then you will build an emotional connection with them 🙂
