I have been taking this brand of protein for many years now. Sure, I’ve tried and experimented with others however I always find myself going back to this brand and type of protein. This is another great whey protein supplement which I have been taking for awhile now. I usually buy this particular brand when the flavours in the Optimum Nutrition range are not in stock!
The amino acid profile and price per serve is very similar to Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard. Ultimate Nutrition also come in a variety of different flavours and mixes as good as Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard.
I highly recommend this brand and when you are able to, you should try it!
APPROX 20 GRAMS OF PROTEIN PER BAR
These bars are my all time favourite protein bars… by far!

Another great protein product that I used to take back in the vegan days! This protein is for anybody (but marketed to vegans) as it is manufactured from brown rice.
Brown rice-based protein absorbs very well by the body and I highly recommend the chocolate or vanilla flavours. Leave the natural “flavour” alone- it tastes like absolute rubbish! However… you can have the natural flavour with a green smoothie or use it as a base to create any flavoured smoothie you like! I’d still go with chocolate or vanilla 🙂
OPTIMUM NUTRITION CREATINE POWDER
I rarely recommend supplements to people despite the hundreds of emails I still receive asking me: “Brad, what supplements should I take?”
Of the thousands of supplements you could buy, there are only a handful (less than 10!!) that actually have decent science supporting their efficacy in helping you get results in the gym. Creatine is one of them.
Creatine monohydrate is the most researched sports supplement on the market. Period. I have an entire digital video course dedicated to using creatine to help build muscle and improve strength, all backed in reputable science.
To take creatine and experience the benefits from it, you will need to take 5 grams (one teaspoon) everyday. You don’t need to follow any mandatory loading phases, or worry about whether you should take it before or after your workout. Just take 5 grams per day. Done!

This quest bar is my favourite flavour. Which is why I am giving it it’s own special mention on this page. I discuss Quest bars above.
Essentially, they are a great protein snack, packed with 20 grams of protein per serve. Above that is the ethics of the company (Quest Nutrition) and the likening I take toward one of the co-founders of the company, Tom Bilyeu. Not only does this protein bar taste amazing but it is also built upon outstanding company culture and ethics.
There’s nothing more to be said. If you haven’t tried Quest bars or, in particular, the chocolate chip cookie dough. You are missing out.
SCIVATION, XTEND BCAAs
DIFFERENT FLAVOURS, 30 SERVINGS
Again, I rarely recommend supplements but Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) should be your friend if you plan on training in a fasted state. Specifically, fasted weight training. This is the only time when taking BCAAs will help to preserve muscle while training in a fasted state.
To be honest, there are several good brands of BCAAs out there. Scivation is one of the most popular on the market.
If you are not training in a fasted state and getting enough protein through whole-food forms of protein (red meat, chicken, fish) or even from protein shakes, you do not need to buy this product.

Sometimes I am asked what pre-workout I take. To be honest, I don’t always take one because they are simply not necessary if…and only if… I can muster up the energy I need with an espresso shot.
Most pre-workouts are just expensive caffeine anyway. However, in saying that, I can usually hit the level of energy needed to get through my workout when I take this product before my weight training session. At the time of writing this, I am taking this product. Sometimes, I do experiment with other pre-workouts.
But just to be clear, this product does contain caffeine (like most pre-workouts) so I suggest you go with an espresso or double espresso first because it is alot of cheaper. If you want to try this product, click below and look for the different flavours.

CAKE BITES BY OPTIMUM NUTRITION
These little bites of protein are BRILLIANT. I did a recent YouTube review and taste test which you should also go and watch! Optimum Nutrition is a reliable brand that has been around for decades, but I had never tried their protein snack bar before. In this case, they market them as “bites.”
Here is a summary:
- Flavours to choose from: Birthday Cake, Chocolate Dipped Cherry, & Red Velvet
- An anytime deliciously whipped snack for active adults interested in new ways to get protein.
- High Protein: 20 grams per serving of 3 cakes
- 3-5g sugar per 3 cakes

BUFF BAKE SNICKERDOODLE COOKIES
This little write-up is not a “review” of the ingredients but of the taste based on the volume of people that suggested that I should try it. Go and check out my review video on YouTube where I taste test the Snickerdoodle flavour!
By the way, I don’t recommend buff bake cookies if you are on a strict meal plan. There is nothing inherently wrong with having ONE of these cookies on a “refeed” day. Of course, not all of the ingredients are going to be healthy but I never suggest eating the box. There is nothing wrong with trying one, which is exactly what I did in the review video.
To be honest, I might only have one or two of these cookies outside of my own fitness model competition preparation. So I speak to an audience that has never tried them before… go and try them!

GREEN TEA EXTRACT (NOW FOODS)
Green tea extract has been shown to help reduce abdominal fat and accelerate exercise-induced fat loss. This supplement is effective in helping you lose fat provided you are already following a structured meal meal (calorie deficit.)
In my workout supplement video course, I discuss the science behind green tea extract and how to take it to get the most benefits from it. This is a brand that I have used in the past and it certainly helped me get leaner!
How to Take Green Tea Extract
The recommended clinical effective dosage of green tea extract is 400 – 600 mg of catechins per day. Ensure you look at the label to ensure your dosage is within this range.
It also needs to be taken daily to receive the full benefits of it.
UDO’S CHOICE OIL 3:6:9 BLEND
Udo’s Choice Oil 3.6.9 Blend is simply incredible! I’ve personally met Dr Udo in Sydney and I’ve even read his book, Fats That Heal Fats That Kill (which I suggest you read!!) I’ve never met someone so passionate about oil!
This is a product that contains unrefined EFA oils that have a nice nutty, buttery taste. I used to spoon this oil directly from the bottle… that’s how amazing it tastes! It contains oils from flax, sesame, sunflower, and evening primrose seeds.
If you are looking for an outstanding source of fats in your diet. I highly suggest you try Udo’s oil. Even if you only try it once! And go and check out his book and let me know what you think 🙂
OPTIMUM NUTRITION CASEIN
Casein takes longer for the body to “burn” it. Which is why it is usually popular to have before bed to ensure a regular supply of amino acids to your muscles while you are sleeping.
If there is a casein product that I recommend. It is this one by Optimum Nutrition.
Casein is great to take throughout the day outside of your typical training sessions (where you would use whey protein within 30 minutes before and after your training.) And if you were to take a protein shake before you go to bed… I would take 30 grams of this product.
PRIMAFORCE YOHIMBINE HCL
Yohimbine is manufactured from the yohimbe plant and has been shown to reduce fat stores in people that are training in a fasted state. Failing to train in a fasted state will null and void the effects of Yohimbine.
By the way, I am assuming you are on a structured meal plan in a negative energy balance (calorie deficit.)? I hope so! 🙂

How To Take Yohimbine HCL
According to the science, you will need to take Yohimbine at a dosage of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight for it to be sufficient for fat loss purposes. It is also best to take it prior to exercise (and fasted) to receive maximum benefits from it.
When I was taking Yohimbine HCL, based on my weight of 200 lbs, works out to be 40 mg! That’s a lot of capsules! But I suggest you assess your tolerance first by taking half of the clinical effective dosage first… and then scale it up from there.
Always take it fasted… always! Otherwise you’ll just waste it as Yohimbine works best when insulin is relatively baseline. The moment you eat something, insulin levels will spike!
Warning: Yohimbine has been shown to increase your blood pressure and therefore is not recommended to anyone with high blood pressure.
How To Use Protein Supplements Properly
I received an email from someone a few days asking me: “Brad, how much protein powder should I take everyday?”
My response was: “None…. except…” (let me explain)
If you can get all of your protein requirements from whole foods (i.e., chicken, beef, fish, etc) then you don’t need to buy any protein powder. However, we all have busy lives and so it gets impractical to prepare 1 gram of protein per pound of lean mass of wholefood protein every day.
This is what I do.
When I am not travelling, I will aim to get 70% of my daily protein intake from chicken, beef, or tuna. The other 30% will come from pre- and post-workout shakes and the occasional protein shake (if I’ve forgotten my lunch, for example!)
If I’m travelling on buses, trains, ferries or flights, then I’ll carry my protein powder with me and get 70% of my daily protein from powder, and the rest from restaurant whole food protein sources. I built most of my current physique this way, while I was travelling!
Strength Training Equipment
FITNESS REALITY 810XLT SUPER MAX POWER CAGE
If you have the space in your home… I would begin constructing my own gym with a power cage! I live in an apartment so it’s not practical for me to build my own gym. A cage is versatile because it allows you to safely perform many of the movements necessary to build a great physique.
The barbell squat, deadlift (without putting holes in the floor,) overhead press, and bench press, are fantastic compound movements which are the core of many beginner strength training programs (StrongLifts 5x5 and Starting Strength.) If you are a beginner and want to build a great body, you must incorporate these exercises (or variations of them) into your training program.
What you are buying is the cage. It does not come with Olympic bars or weight plates.

FITNESS REALITY 1000 ADJUSTABLE WEIGHT BENCH
This bench is the staple in my training sessions. No home gym setup is complete without an adjustable weight bench. I will usually use an adjustable weight bench to do any of the following exercises (links are clickable to take you to a demonstration video):
- Incline dumbbell bench press
- Flat dumbbell bench press
- Dumbbell Flys
- Bent-over dumbbell rows
- Any exercises in the seated position (i.e., seated shoulder press, concentration curls, tricep dips)
- Any exercise which requires stabilisation (i.e., Bulgarian split squats)
- The list is limitless… I’ll stop here 🙂
And you will use this bench inside the power cage I recommended above. I highly recommend this product.
BOWFLEX ADJUSTABLE DUMBBELLS (PAIR)
Who has space for a giant line-up of dumbbells in their home? As I said, if I’m building a home gym and want to conserve space. I would be definitely going for the adjustable dumbbell set such as the Bowflex.

AB WHEEL ROLLER
I have a secret love affair with the ab wheel roller. I can hands-down say that I built my abs using this roller. My roller (which is green coloured) has travelled to Africa, Asia, South America, and a few random islands with me. The ab wheel rollout (the exercise) uses the ab wheel and is one of the hardest (but most effective) exercises you can possibly do to build abs.
Here I demonstrate the use of the ab wheel roller on my YouTube channel. The ab wheel rollout exercises are also featured in my six-pack abs digital online course. I have also written an article about how you can build a great six pack (and core) using the ab wheel roller.
All I can say is… go and buy it and start using it! I’m curious to know how you go so please send me an email and let me know. I can give you some pointers on progression with this roller.
HARBINGER BIG GRIP LIFTING STRAPS
A question I often get from beginners starting their strength training journey is: “should I wear lifting straps?”
Personally, I started using lifting straps at the beginning of my training journey because I was told this was “the way” to properly train my back during the deadlift. Usually grip will fail first which can impact your ability to progressively overload larger muscle groups.
After a few years of experience, I would suggest that you lift through your sets until your grip begins to fail. This is when you would begin using lifting straps! But not all lifting straps are created equal. I would suggest buying these as they will last a very long time! I’ve had my set for about 4 years now. Prior to that, I had shitty ones that were more of a distraction during my sets more than anything else.
I suggest buying them and let me know how it goes 🙂 you won’t be disappointed! If you are not sure how to use them (once you buy them) then let me know, I will point you in the right direction for some awesome tutorial videos.
HARBINGER DIP BELT
You don’t need to buy this if you are just starting out. This belt allows you to increase the weight of body weight exercises such as dips, pull-ups and chin-ups. Below are some demonstration videos you should go and check out.
As a beginner, your focus is to try and do one pull-up, one chin-up, and one dip with just your body weight! When I started my journey, I couldn’t even do one rep with my body weight!! In fact, you might even need to do assisted exercises using resistance bands so you can achieve one rep!
Once you are able to do more than 4-5 reps of each of these exercises unassisted (no resistance bands,) it is a pretty good idea to then buy this belt to add weight to these exercises. Remember, if you want to get stronger, you must add a small amount of weight to your exercises every week. A weight belt will allow you to add plates to it… and don’t be intimidated by it. You’ll get the hang of it after the first few sets 🙂

KOOTEK HAND GRIP STRENGTHENER
I highly recommend this product if you are wanting to dramatically improve your grip strength. The reason for improving your grip strength is to remove the barrier of your grip failing before the muscles that you intend on training.
I never really took my grip strength seriously until I auditioned for the TV show The Australian Ninja Warrior. A show where your success on the course is predicated on upper body/ grip strength. I spent alot of time training my grip using a hand grip while I sat at my desk in my corporate job.
What’s great about this spring-loaded device is you can use it 3 times per week at your desk, for no more than about 10 minutes (while doing other things!) It is definitely worth checking out.
ACCU-MEASURE FITNESS 3000 FAT CALIPER
I have been using this caliper for years! Not only do I use this caliper for measurements every 2 weeks or so (when I’m preparing for a competition,) I can also get my accuracy to within 1-2% of my DEXA scan results.
The reason for tracking your body fat percentage is to determine if you are making progress with all of the hard work of dieting and training you are putting in. There are ways of doing this more accurately than using this caliper however they cost considerably more money! Most fitness professionals agree that DEXA scans and submersion testing are the most accurate methods… but the cost?
Sure, I get DEXA scans done at $60-70 per scan but only every 2-3 months! I still use my $6-7 caliper every 2 weeks or so because it is more economical and my accuracy is pretty good.
You cannot go wrong for the price. I suggest you watch my demonstration video of how I use the Accu-measure caliper to accurately obtain my body fat percentage. I certainly recommend buying one.
RUNFAST WEIGHTED VEST
Why would anyone wear one of these, you might ask. Well, they are absolutely amazing if you want to add weight to any bodyweight exercise. As mentioned previously when I recommended the dip belt, the weighted vest allows you to add or remove weight to progressively overload the muscles. Remember, although bodyweight workouts can absolutely get you into the best shape, you will reach a point where you will need to add weight to see further increases in strength.
Body weight exercises was the bulk of my training earlier on in my journey. When I was travelling for 2-3-4 months around the world, most times with no access to gyms, I would train wherever I had a small 2 x 2 squared metred space. The book I used to derive alot of my body weight training is by Mark Lauren. Check out “You Are Your Own Gym: Bible Of Bodyweight Exercises”
Definitely a worthwhile investment.
THE CAPTAIN’S CHAIR
This piece of equipment is what I highly recommend if you are setting up a home gym. Of course, if you go to the gym then I highly recommend using this weird contraption. Weird? Yeah, it was my first impression of it when I first set foot into my first ever gym.
This contraption is a seatless chair that you climb into and can do anything from pull-ups and chin-ups, to dips and leg raises. It is a piece of equipment that would be part of my own home gym if I had an apartment a bit bigger than a shoe box! 🙂
Here are some of the exercises that I perform on this contraption along with demonstration videos;
- Captain’s Chair Leg Raises (for my lower abs)
- Captain’s Chair Dips (for triceps and chest)
- Wide-Grip Pull-ups (the bars used in the video are the same as the bars on the Captain’s Chair)
These are just a few. Highly recommend it. Of course… if you have a gym membership then don’t buy it (use it!)
This book is hands down one of my favourite books! I highly recommend that you go out and buy this book!!! It was one of the first books I ever started using to start strength training.
There is no other book on barbell training ever written that provides such a comprehensive set of instructions on basic barbell exercises. The instructions in this book apply to men and women, whether young or old, and wanting to get into shape.
The foundation of what I learned about strength training came from this book! If you want to build muscle and strength and get ahead of most people in the gym which are struggling with a transformation, this book is definitely worth the $20 something dollar investment.
You will learn;
- Why you need to start training with barbells for strength training.
- The mechanics of barbell training.
- And a whole lot more!!
The book is also full of illustrations and photographs. I do recommend that you search “Mark Rippetoe” in YouTube and watch his instructional videos on how to deadlift, barbell squat, overhead press, among others. The YouTube videos supplement the content of this book remarkably well.

BURN THE FAT, FEED THE MUSCLE
This book is brilliant. Solid information about how to lose fat and preserve muscle. I’ve read hundreds of books and magazines over the years and this book is in my top 5!
No B-S information modelled from athletes that have already achieved the results. It’s not filled with scientific jargon. Which, I personally love by the way, but this book is written for anybody wanting an easy flow without having to Google every second word.
I read this book a few years ago and was surprised that it is one of few body transformation manuals that covers Dieting, Training, and Supplementation!

I read this book when I was about 15 or 16 years old. It impacted the way I perceived the world around me. I grew up with challenges dealing with the suicide of my brother. My closest friend loaned this book to me, which I ended up keeping 🙂

THE THANK YOU ECONOMY
Another book that I’ve read… only once! 🙂 Unlike Crush it, which is a book suited more for the solopreneur (like me) that is based on building a personal brand around the things you are passionate about.
Because I was so heavily engrossed in Crush it by Gary Vaynerchuk, I decided to buy this book and see what further value I could extract from the mind of Gary Vaynerchuk. It turns out… this book is also incredible!
I was able to learn the importance of giving a sh*t about people. Not that I didn’t already. But Gary really drills home the point of building strong relationships with your customers. This seems to make sense. But his communication style was really effective in getting me to prioritize my audience above all else.
This book is the No. 1 reason why many of my online fitness courses are free. It is also the No. 1 reason why I encourage my audience to reach me on Snapchat (SeekFitLife) or Instagram @bradnewtonofficial (rather than email) because I can build a closer relationship with my audience.
The punchline of this book is CARE. Care about people and you…will…win. And although I’m relatively new to the business scene, I am beginning to see the early stage impact of this commonly overlooked concept of business.
I recommend this book if you have a bit of a social media following around your own products or services, and looking at ways of scaling it.
YOU ARE YOUR OWN GYM: BIBLE OF BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES
I am often asked what bodyweight exercises I recommend to build a great physique while travelling. It has been much easier for me to recommend this book because it was one of the first training books I ever purchased!
Several years ago, I spent alot of time travelling on the road and never always had access to a gym. This was the first ever book on bodyweight exercises that I purchased and I highly recommend it.
If you are wanting to apply any of his 125 or so illustrated bodyweight exercises for just 30 minutes a session, 4 times per week, you will certainly be on your way to build a great body.
This book is invaluable and I suggest using it as your bible for whenever you plan on backpacking or travelling for extended periods of time with no access to a gym. My advice: go and get it!
MINI HABITS: SMALLER HABITS, BIGGER RESULTS
This book is one of my all time favourites. If you are looking at “losing weight” and “getting into shape.” Rather than psyching yourself out with lofty New Years Resolutions (which never work and the book explains why!) and all-or-nothing weight loss programs or fad diets… start with small changes.
By the way, one of the biggest reasons why I was never ripped as a 23 year old was because every time I started a weight loss program, it was an all-or-nothing ordeal. Most people don’t have the willpower capacity to go hardcore into a program if they are just starting out. It is one of the biggest reasons why I failed and why most people fail.
This book teaches you how to make small and steady progress. The strategy I used to transform my body (and my life) was literally starting with small changes. I started by slowly kicking my junk food addiction, followed by slowly dropping my sugar addiction, and then I moved into slowly learning different exercises. Reading 1-2 articles on nutrition or fitness every week. Training once per week became twice per week. 4-5 years later, I competed in the World Titles in fitness and came 5th place!
Had I woken up 4-5 years ago and said “I’m going to compete on the world stage,” I would have laughed while eating donuts 🙂 Yet, most people approach a body transformation this way and fail before they even get started.
So, if you are just starting your fitness journey by wanting to lose 50 pounds? Awesome! This book will teach you the blueprint in taking the baby mindset steps necessary to make it happen. If you are serious about losing fat and building muscle in a predictable manner, you must buy a food scale! If you watch any of my vlogs on YouTube and watch me prepare for a fitness model competition, I always use a food scale.

You might find this hard to believe but all of my online video courses and over 300 YouTube videos were filmed with either my GoPro Hero 5 or my Samsung S7 (mobile phone!) With 98% of my videos being shot with my GoPro!
