If you are reading this and know me personally — I am the most unsophisticated guy when it comes to meal prep. I am also the most practical and hands-on.

So, I will give you the essentials necessary to pull-off a really good meal prep consistent with helping you achieve your goals of building a great physique.

Assuming you’ve already created your meal plans, it is time to re-create the all-too-familiar Instagram food porn that we often see under the hashtag #mealprep

You need to invest in reasonably good quality measuring cups, spoons, digital kitchen scales, and of course — decent storage containers.

The storage containers you purchase can either be Tupperware or glass. The choice is yours. Avoid cheap and nasty containers if you plan to use those same containers to reheat your food in the microwave or oven.

Compartment Containers (Plastic)

I’ve used a container set like this in the past. It is perfect for keeping your protein, carbohydrates, and fats separate. They are super easy to clean and I highly recommend them.

Compartment Containers (Glass)

Alternatively, you can use glass meal prep containers. I never use glass meal prep containers because they would add extra weight to my gym bag. I can hear some of you saying: “C’mon Brad, harden up!”

There’s the whole debate of chemicals leaching from container plastics and on that note — it is probably better to go with glass.

Here’s an option for you.

 
 

“Mindless Eating” Containers

Snacking on large portion sizes is always going to end up meaning eating the whole god damn thing! Let’s face it, it’s going to be hard to stop yourself. Especially if you are in a calorie deficit to lose fat and trying your best to stave off cravings.

In the meal planning phase, I always suggest creating high protein snacks to get you from Meal 1 to Meal 2, for example. At least, snacks that are high in fibre and will keep you fuller for longer.

But you need containers for these “snack” foods such as nuts, celery sticks, carrots, pretzels, protein balls, etc. What should you go with?

A good set of small containers, jars, or zip lock bags. You could try this set:

Digital Kitchen Scales

Don’t just look at a piece of meat and guess the weight of it. The only people that can pull this trick off are the deli people that can reach into the turkey and grab almost exactly the weight you ask for.

I find that impressive!

But a common mistake that people make is they try and guess food portions. To guarantee never making progress with your meal plan is to fail to weigh your food portions.

A set of digital kitchen scales is one of the essentials you need when it comes to successful meal planning.
